Abstract
The chronotope of the road in On the Road is a dynamic and multifaceted symbol,
encompassing the novel's themes of freedom, self-discovery, rebellion, and the
search for authenticity. This influences the characters' experiences, relationships,
and worldviews, reflecting the broader cultural and social landscape of mid-century
America. Through the chronotope of the road, Kerouac captures the essence of the
Beat generation and the countercultural spirit of the era, painting a powerful portrait
of a generation searching for meaning and connection in a developing world. This
article describes the features and functions of road chronotope in the work On the
Road.
