Abstract

The rapid growth of social media has transformed educational environments across the world. Platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, WhatsApp, TikTok, and X (formerly Twitter) have become important tools for communication, collaboration, information sharing, and knowledge construction. This thesis examines the effects of social media on education by analyzing its influence on student learning, academic performance, communication, collaboration, motivation, and digital literacy. The study also explores the challenges associated with social media use, including distraction, misinformation, cyberbullying, privacy concerns, and excessive screen time. Drawing upon recent scholarly literature, the paper argues that social media can significantly enhance educational outcomes when used strategically and responsibly. However, unregulated or excessive use may negatively affect academic achievement and student well-being. The findings suggest that educators, institutions, and policymakers should promote digital literacy and establish effective guidelines to maximize the educational benefits of social media while minimizing its risks
